breaking into the field is hard. If you have the education and experience then go ahead and charge money. I would not recomend a % of profit though because there is no real way for you to know how much that company is making so you may get screwed over. Decide instead of an hourly rate to charge each potential customer. Tell them how many hours it will take you to preform the task at hand, and bill them for it. Also make it clear what comes w/ it (like how many comps do they get? do they get ownership of the image? how many revisions come with it exc....)If you are just starting out, I would recomend finding a job that will do all that for you, and you can get some experience under your belt. Then %26quot;test the waters%26quot; in the freelance world, because competition is extremely fierce and sometimes it isn%26#039;t even worth your time to get involved in a project where you had to come down on your price just to win the bid for it.
