You really should have taken care of it at the time instead of letting time lapse. You need to contact the company or collection agency, if it has been turned over to one, and explain that you were never abroad. Gather some proof if possible.Good Luck!
p.s. it will be on your credit report 7-10 years.

you should talk to an attorney before they issue a judgement, I know in the US, once a Judgement goes on your credit from the court, they they garnish your wages.
You can%26#039;t remove that even with bankruptcy.
Best to offer them a settlement, like agree to pay 1/2 in exchange for a reciept of paid in full by settlement.
Then they can%26#039;t write off or charge off the remaining balance as bad debt have them fax the agreement to you in writing or email it, BEFORE you pay. -
If you have proof that you were abroad and couldn%26#039;t have run up the debt then provide them with that proof and challenge them on it... if not you may have to pay it to avoid any further action being taken against you. If you have to pay and contact the company they should accept repayment so that you don%26#039;t have to repay it all in one go. Your credit rating will improve through time so long as you don%26#039;t run up a massive amount of debts.
