I am a new bill collector? I don%26#039;t act like I am better than the person I%26#039;m talking to because I have been in their shoes before and was talked to very hateful. What should I say when I call to collect a debt?

Hello is so in so there!
Hi, I%26#039;m calling because you owe money to this company! do you have any intent on paying? would you like to work out a payment plan?

if they say no then hang up and record the information!
if they say yes then ask them how would you like to start making payments and one what sort of payment schedual would you like to work with me!

  • I had an account mistakenly turned over to collectors (even though the original company actually owed ME money because I had overpaid on the account before I closed it). The experience I had with collectors was a nightmare, because it seemed like no matter how much documentation and proof I had, the collectors would simply deny it existed.

    %26quot;Oh darn, the fax machine ate your documentation, can you send it again?%26quot;

    %26quot;We never got that packet you send via certified return-receipt mail, and the person who signed it doesn%26#039;t work here.%26quot;

    Or the doozy: %26quot;You didn%26#039;t challenge our collection in time.%26quot; (I sent the challenge notice the next day after receiving it -- but the original collection letter was dated two months before the postmark. Nice try, bozos.)

    But I have the feeling that %26quot;nice%26quot; collectors don%26#039;t scare enough people into paying legitimate debts, and they probably wouldn%26#039;t last long in that job. I feel for your situation there. Unfortunately, there are a lot of folks who skip out on their debts, and I have the feeling that with three decades conservative economics and their predictable results, it%26#039;s only going to get worse.

    I guess the thing I would say is: be respectful of folks, and don%26#039;t skirt around the law. If someone has documentation that can prove that the collection is a mistake, then don%26#039;t act like they%26#039;re trying to B.S. you. I was within 24 hours of filing a civil suit against mine before they finally admitted their error. To this day I regret not filing the suit anyway. All over $52 they claimed I owed -- when in reality I had overpaid the original account by $13 (and received a refund from the original company, who couldn%26#039;t get the collectors to stop either). The time and hassle this caused me was beyond belief, not to mention the stress and their attempt to put a black mark on my credit rating (which is in the high 700s).

    All this over a mistaken 50 buck %26quot;debt%26quot;. To this day I still use a credit monitoring service just because of them: I don%26#039;t trust them to keep their word.

    Keep yours. 0% 0 Votes
  • Just ask them if they know they are late in paying... some people just forget who they owe or how much, or have lost the statements they need in order to pay, etc. 25% 1 Vote
